Perseverance is a Choice

Ep 31, Shooting Hollywood's Elite, Photographer Jeff Lipsky

How does one get to shoot the biggest names in Hollywood (and sports) as well as the biggest brands in the world?  He packs up his car and drives to Telluride, Colorado where he learns to snowboard and fly fish and teach others to do the same for ten years.  Then he moves to LA and works his arse off for some of the most demanding photographers in the world before he goes out on his own.  Most importantly, he lives by the creed, "If I do what I love, I'll be good at it".  I dare you not to like Jeff Lipsky.

Ep 29, Summer Intern to Social Media Guru, Emily Raiber

"And when I finally got pregnant, it was like... 'Okay, be calm!' 'But really, this is stressful!' 'But, be calm!  Don't be so stressful I have to deal with this!!'"

A lot of us remember where we were on July 16, 1999 when John F. Kennedy Jr. died tragically.  Emily Raiber was a college kid, doing a summer News Internship out of Colgate University when she went in on a Saturday and happened to be "in the right place at the right time".  Her actions that day led to a quick start on the career path, including a great stint with Dr. Drew a few years later, but she was slowed down by a cancelled show, an auto-immune disease  and a delayed attempt at fertility.  While she finally gave birth, motherhood shifted her perspective on how she wanted to spend her time, eventually leading her to the courageous decision to strike out on her own and put her producing skills to use in a more singular way that allowed her to spend time with her baby.  She now manages the social media accounts of people whose followings surpass the amount of viewers of the shows she used to produce.

You may know him from Pitch Perfect, the Barbershop movies, The Mindy Project or Showtime's White Famous.  Utkarsh Ambudkar is a cat.  He's hip, he's cool and, according to him, most roles for young Indian males in Hollywood are NOT written as the hip, cool guy.  While I knew, prior to our interview, that he used to do underground rap battles like Eminem in 8 Mile, I didn't realize that he considers rap the life-blood to his career.  An NYU grad who has learned to reveal his authentic self in order to create his own niche, Utkarsh is full of wisdom that is bound to inspire you.  Our conversation includes...
##

Growing up with two PhDs as parents.

##

Why Acting Conservatory is not for everyone.

##
How rap saved Utkarsh and taught him that being himself, rather than his idols, was his super power.

##
Utkarsh's collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda and his involvement in the creation of Hamilton.

##

Blazing a trail for the next generation of Indian Actors.

Despite my hesitation, former guest, Adventure Photographer Roger Fishman (Ep 18) persisted in getting me to sit down to answer some of his questions about my life journey.  Reluctant as I was, he convinced me that my listeners might want to hear it, and once we got going I fired away.  Luckily for me, Roger took all my statements and transformed them into something that may actually motivate or inspire you.  Our conversation includes...
##

Growing up in a rural environment and its effects on my persona.

##

My Mom's use of a Cow Bell.

##
How sports taught me to be more than I could be.

##
How a trip to Italy turned my life toward the arts, with the help of a gift from my sister.

##

Why my brother likes all comparisons to Wayne from The Wonder Years.

##

How supportive parents and friends have helped me weather the endless storm that is a career as an Actor.

##

How my wife and kids have allowed me to keep taking risks and helped my work grow deeper with age.

Ep 26, Actor Eric Christian Olsen:  Choosing Hope over Fear

To most other Actors, Eric Christian Olsen's career is enviable.  And he lives with extreme gratitude for the opportunities he's been given.  But he also has a sense of humor about himself so when I asked him for some "No"s in his life, prior to our interview, he said, "Bro, just check my IMDb page.  95% of those jobs have been failures!"  His adoption of Winston Churchill's quote, "The definition of Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm" is all over this chat.  Our conversation includes...
##

Knowing a person's character by how they treat a waiter.

##

Using one's position and power for good, to help others.

##
How to refuse to be defined by your job.

##
How to assemble a team, multi-task and get more shit done than the average human.

##

How to make decisions from a place of Hope rather than Fear.

##

How to bounce back from disastrous results by placing more emphasis on your experience than the outcome.

##

The most valuable lesson you can teach your kids:  How to "figure it out" when things go wrong.

Ep 23, Hot Wings to Hedge Funds with Colin Macintosh

Colin Macintosh is no stranger to failure.  When he invested his own money, and that of his friends and family, in the Buffalo Wing business in New York City, he lost his shirt.  And suffered from meningitis.  But this former All-State Tennis player turned his luck around and made his money back the old fashion way, he earned it.  A true grinder, Colin worked his way up in the Convertible Bond world, cashed in for yet another dead end stint in Entertainment, then reinvented himself again by co-founding Carbon Beach Asset Management Fund.  Our conversation includes...

A childhood story involving Colin's brother's best friend, and one of the biggest stars in the world.

##

The links between making it in baseball and Hollywood and why Colin quit both but succeeded elsewhere.

##
How to bounce back from meningitis and a re-possessed car to become wealthy just a few years later.

##
The downside of putting one's own money into a start up business.

##

How "Glengarry Glen Ross" taught Colin how to sell.

##

Why failure is the ultimate fuel to success.

Ep 22, Juilliard, Dennis Leary & Everything in Between with Thespian Kevin Daniels

Kevin Daniels is a big man who grew up in Texas where HS Football is HUGE.  But he decided after one season as a youngster that the stage and screen is where he wanted to be.  He found success early with a paying gig in Dallas as a teenager.  And got into the incredibly prestigious Julliard School in NYC because he was "too ignorant to realize he should be nervous" for the audition.  His first gig out of school was at Lincoln Center with Helen Hunt and Kyra Sedgwick.  When I met him he was one of the leads on Dennis Leary's "Sirens", but that went away unexpectedly after two seasons causing him to hit the inevitable wall that all actors run into at one point or another in a long career.  But through it all, he leads with unshakeable faith and an infectious laugh that lets himself, and everyone around him, know that good times are on their way.  Our conversation includes...

How one relative's stories of travel and art turned Kevin on to Acting.

##

Why, when you're "big and black" in Texas, everyone looks at you like you're nuts if you don't play football.

##
How Helen Hunt's generosity and understanding of the Actor's plight got Kevin his first TV gig on "Mad About You".

##
Working with Harrison Ford.

##

The camaraderie of the cast of "Sirens" and how Dennis Leary and Bob Fisher ("Wedding Crashers") created the perfect work environment.

##

The role of faith in fighting the demons of unemployment as an Actor.

Despite his self-deprecation about the title, Ollie Dunn was, in fact, the Gatorade Player of the Year in Washington DC as a baseball player in High School.  He followed that with a 4-year career at Northwestern University and then took his athletic prowess to the links.  Scraping by while attempting to join the PGA tour, Ollie made the tour in Canada and had many successes despite missing his ultimate Brass Ring.  Now he brings the lessons he learned from his "9,998 No's" to his kids and his clients, where he is a teaching pro in Los Angeles.  Our conversation includes...

Why golf is the perfect metaphor for life and how it has contributed to Ollie's parenting. ## How the right partner, or caddy, can keep us at peak performance by focusing our energy on the things that help us instead of our fears of incompetence. ## The very real struggle of trying to be a professional golfer. ## Why golf is more about mental strength than athletic ability. ## How Ollie lured me, and several other Dads and their kids, into his "surf club"  with his slogan "It's not about the waves, it's about community." ## The dangers of "coffee club".

When he was 7 years old, he took his first CPR class.  By his teens, he was working as a first responder and teaching CPR.  When his father died prematurely, his goal of being an MD shifted to being another kind of doctor, DC, Chiropractor and Massage Therapist.  He is THE go-to guy for celebrities in Hollywood when it comes to breeched babies.  But possibly most interesting is that didn't tell me til AFTER the interview that he was diagnosed with Facial Blindness (inability to recognize faces) and ADD at almost 40 years of age.  Our conversation includes...

Having a passion for something from as early as one can remember. ## How chiropractic work applies to everyone, but can be very useful to pregnant women. ## How Dr. Berlin and his wife went from fertility challenges and miscarriages in New York to 4 children in LA. ## The challenges of vaginal birth and why flexibility and elasticity are so important. ## Beautiful life lessons from participating in births so often. ## Podcasts, documentary films, TV shows and comedy shows - all on Dr. Berlin's resume.  Spreading the message.

In his youth in Slovenia, Luka Hocevar was a self-admitted criminal. Basketball saved him. And the training he did to prepare for Pro Basketball in Europe turned into his life's passion. But he doesn't view coaching as something limited to the gym. His groundbreaking Fitness Center, Vigor Ground Fitness, in Seattle, Washington is just the first step toward building a community and environment that helps kids avoid the traps he fell into on the street and helps adults live the life they were meant to live. Giving back by giving your all, with Vigor. Our conversation includes...

Being an outsider in a foreign land when you don't know the language. ## How being picked last led to playing Professional Basketball against the odds. ## The downfalls of being a gangster and the search for false status. ## Seizing an opportunity to train with world-class coaches as a teen. ## How one coach's questions led to choosing a better future. ## Why Pro Basketball isn't always what it's cracked up to be. ## Giving back - how Luka and Vigor Ground Fitness have thrown a charity event EVERY Saturday for over a decade. ## The power of a clear vision and the seeds of "Vigorville".

Nowadays, when he's not at home being a doting husband and devoted Dad, Roger Fishman hangs out of helicopters around the world shooting in extreme environments from 2,000 ft. above ground. Unless he's face to face with a pack of grizzlies in a running river or standing in the path of a herd of elephants. But his life wasn't always so enviable. Our conversation includes...

How growing up in a broken home with limited money turned out to be a gift. ## How responsibility at a young age translates to being a "logistics guy". ## Who ever heard of a candy enforcer? ## What to say to the Dean of your University when he refuses to let you graduate. ## How helium balloons can kick-start a high-powered career. ## "Live is like pinball. You just have to keep the ball in play." ## How walking away from a career others would kill for can save you. ## Choosing discomfort over comfort, managing your fears and staring wild animals in the eyes at close range.

How my guests' courage to be vulnerable has helped many listeners with their own struggles. ## Learning how to let go of control and delegate more. ## Excerpts from Gay Hendrick's "The Big Leap" ## Why Mark Manson thinks we need to give less f*#!s. ## Why most of us aren't AMAZING out of the gate with any new venture and why we have to leap. ## How to stop letting the critic in our head call our shots. ## Why I want to go read "The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman.

When Lili Pettit left the fashion industry in 2011 to start her own company, @clutterhealing, it wasn't part of some master-plan she'd cooked up as a child. It was the result of a gift she'd begun developing to cope with instability and tension as a young girl being called upon. Once news of her gift was out, her business began booming and her willingness to explore led to a dual career as a Breath Meditation Teacher at Unplugged in Los Angeles. Our conversation includes...

Why de-cluttering a house is way more involved than you realize. ## How a mindful touch puts clients at ease. ## How beauty and calm can come from chaos and tension. ## Why clearing space is essential to inviting new energy into a home and new possibilities into a life. ## Why it doesn't hurt when your first client is a celebrity and they like what you've done for them. ## How Meditation, and simple breath, changed Lili's life and work. ## Why some people don't like strangers looking through their underwear drawer and how Clutter Healing overcomes that.

We've been hearing about sexual abuse in the news a lot these days, but to hear it from a survivor who has turned it into her cause is inspiring and gives us faith in humanity. Having grown up in poverty and suffering sexual abuse at the hands of a family member, Dr. Hernandez is on a mission to stop it from happening to her kids and yours. Our conversation includes...

Empowering your children's independence without coddling them. ## Why parents are misreading the data when they only warn their kids about talking to STRANGERS. ## How an abused child becomes more susceptible to further abuse. ## How The Brady Bunch saved Dr. Hernandez. ## Why parents should know where their kids are and what they're doing. ## Why Angelica thought her Elite School colleagues said she was "East of Money". ## Fighting the good fight and turning your worst nightmare into your life's cause.

Today, Brian Garrett is revered as the Managing Director and Co-Founder of Los Angeles’ most mature and successful Technology-based Seed-Fund, Crosscut Ventures, which mentors and partners with Entrepreneurs from small businesses and helps them grow to be giants.  But life wasn’t always so easy.  Witnessing his father’s fatal heart attack, at the impressionable age of 13, Brian was faced with a choice:  Be a victim.  Or choose to make the most out of the time he has on this earth.  He chose the latter.  And still, it hasn’t been easy.  Conversation includes…

Why everyone thinks people “in Finance” are jerks. ## How Brian COMPLETELY bombed and miscalculated on one of his first assignments. ## Turning tragedy into an opportunity to make more of your life. ## How tough coaches can teach discipline that carries you to great achievement. ## Why Brian’s wife is the REAL hero of their family’s story. ## How many years of hell it takes before you come out the other side. ## How, even after you’ve “come out the other side”, your body can break down on you if you've pushed too hard. ## Why Brian wrote a 13 page “Book” to his 13 year old son for his Birthday. ## Why Crosscut Ventures is so good at what they do and how they’re more akin to Creative Mentors in the Arts than Gordon Gekko from ‘Wall Street’.

Few stories fit “The American Dream” plot like that of Bedros Keuilian:  After his father snuck his family out of Soviet-occupied Armenia, he and his brother would help their Dad scrounge for food by ‘dumpster diving’ for groceries behind Supermarkets.  A self-proclaimed “HoneyBadger” who is not afraid to out hustle his competition, Bedros’ work ethic is still overshadowed by his warmth and desire to teach and inspire others to find financial freedom and stay fit.  A true Rags to Riches story.  Our conversation includes...

How Bedros’ father, a tailor, outmaneuvered the KGB to sneak out of the Soviet Union. ## It all started with a girl… and a prom... ## Bedros opens up about the near-collapse of his business and why there are websites devoted to calling him a Ripoff. ## Why Bedros’ first client called him an “order taker” before mentoring him in sales and entrepreneurship. ## Learning how to delegate so that your vision can be carried out with the help of others. ## How to hire the right people and build a sales-force of like-minded, inspired individuals. ## Why there is no substitute for being told “No” when it comes to learning. ## Bedros’ theory on going from Crop Duster (dabbling) to a Fighter Jet (being the best of the best), and how he built his multi-million dollar companies.

A quiet soul with a big heart, Drago Sumonja is getting a second round of acknowledgement for his new film starring the late Harry Dean Stanton after toiling a way for a LONG time.  Our conversation includes...

One night your film is the toast of the festival in Locarno, Italy.  The next night you’re standing behind three feet of mahogany, pouring drinks. How do you deal? ## Why Drago’s 2009 documentary, Char-ac-ter, is now required viewing for any actor who will listen to me. ## How many hours of unreleased interviews remain on the shelf and why only two made it into Char-ac-ter. ## Why sometimes going to a famous restaurant in LA can lead to people who open doors to your career (IF you’re not annoying) ## If you find a great co-writer like Logan Sparks, you can COLLABORATE and write a great script if you meet consistently, a few hours a day. ## Writing for an old-school star like Harry Dean Stanton - give him a great character, get out of his way and let him bring his magic.

Despite finding EXTREME success in the Fitness world, Craig Ballantyne found himself paralyzed by massive panic attacks while at the height of his earnings.  After suffering through immense fear and near-collapse, he decided to lean into the fear and came out on the other side with his life’s work dedicated to helping others find the RIGHT path for THEM, so that they wouldn’t suffer the way he did.  Finding fulfillment and purpose, he found, is TRUE success.  Our conversation includes...

How to optimize your workflow and cut out the time-sucks that slow you down. ## Why your snooze button is your enemy (and hear how my college roommate removed mine in 1994) ## Can you wake up earlier and Dominate your Day before you drop the kids at school? ## How attending one of Craig’s Perfect Life Workshops helped me understand MY challenges and focus on what counts most for me rather than try to impose some prefabricated, one-size-fits-all program onto my life.

I got to sit down with New York Times Best Selling Author (“On the Edge - The Art of High Impact Leadership") and Captain of America’s First Female Everest Expedition, Alison Levine.  Alison is also a highly sought after corporate speaker and has even served as a consultant to the US Military.  Even the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, appointed her to be his Deputy Finance Director when he ran for Governor of California.  But, like every other guest of 10,000 “No” s, what I love about Alison is that, despite her accomplishments, her Ego is tiny compared to her desire to serve others through education and inspiration. Our conversation includes...

What it takes to LITERALLY climb any mountain. ## “Failing” so epically that you are the butt of Jay Leno’s opening monologue. ## How, even if you were born with a heart defect, you choose to climb the highest peak on every continent and ski both poles and succeed. ## Why backing down is not the same as giving up. ## Why you should treat others with respect and kindness.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Teen Wolf and Melrose Place alum, Linden Ashby.  Full of sage wisdom from years of balancing work and family, Linden's perspective is refreshingly honest.  He was once told by the director of A Time To Kill that he was going to be the lead before he found out they were "giving it to a kid named McConaughey".  He met his wife, Susan Walters, and Breaking Bad's Walter White, on the set of a Soap Opera a long time ago.  His ride has been an adventure.  Our conversation includes...

Why Linden said, "That's it. I'm out. I'm moving the family to Atlanta" only to be rediscovered there for the role that would resurrect his career and bring him a whole new legion of young fans. ## How, from the Soaps to Mortal Kombat to Wyatt Earp to Melrose Place and Teen Wolf, Linden Ashby has always kept his head on his shoulders (except when he didn't... and got fired... Or showed up at his loud neighbor's house with a shovel).  ## Why, if you think your work-life is tumultuous, you will realize that you are not alone. ## How to not only survive, but THRIVE (and raise two beautiful, overachieving daughters from ONE marriage) if you've got stamina and grit.

I had the good fortune to sit down with Amy Budden.  Her booming resilience training business, Connect The Mind, came directly from sickness, stress and loss. It was through protecting her daughter from the harsh reactions to heavy doses of meds that Amy discovered the power of Meditation and eventually, with the aid of a decade of study, Hypnotherapy. Having stepped away from her post as one of Adam Sandler's go-to film editors to bear children, Amy "never could have written in a million years" that she would one day serve as a spiritual beacon to so many others, including one of her childhood celebrity idols. Our conversation includes...

How eight miscarriages, a sick child, and a painful divorce brought Amy the grief and strength to be able to guide others. ##  Why everyone from Actors to CEOs to Mothers and others from all walks of life allow Amy to lead them through their own painful experiences. ## Writing your own story.  ## Visualizing your desired outcome clearly and concisely. ## Why sometimes everything needs to shatter in order for us to learn how strong we really are. ## Connect with Amy at ConnectTheMind.com

HBO, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, Oscar Nominated Director Whit Stillman, Cannes Directorial Winner Matt Ross, The Duplass Brothers, Chris Messina... these are just a few of Doug's esteemed collaborators. To most Cinematographers over the age of 40 being honest about their feelings, 33 year old Doug Emmett's prolific career would be the source of much envy and jealousy. But to sit down with Doug to talk shop and hear about his journey to his current place in the world of Film & TV, is to love him.  Our conversation includes...

Why Doug was uneasy about being interviewed for a podcast called 10,000 "No" s. ## How Doug's path to success has been paved with patience, a willingness to fail, a lot of hard work and the ability to overcome challenges. ## Prickly actors and sunsets that refuse to wait for filmmakers to "get the shot". ## Doug's early journey to photography, starting at the age of 7.  ##  How Doug's mother offered to get him an SLR film camera if he took on extra chores to help out his injured father. ## A mother/son mentorship.  ## Learning about lenses and F-stops.  ## Going out to shoot videos of neighborhood kids with his brother. ## Great teachers who make a difference. ## Why Doug's mantra has been to serve the story, serve the project and serve the director.

At the age of 42, Rob Whitaker was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. Not one to accept this news passively, Rob chose to wage his own war, with biting humor and a unique perspective on how to manage pain and setbacks. Rob's life with his wife and kids is enviable to most because he has chosen to live it to the fullest. Honest, tough and funny, Rob gets down to the brass tacks and talks about his hopes, his strategies and his fears. Our conversation includes...

How Rob's words of wisdom are being used by Nurses from Sloane Kettering and Doctors of Nursing up and down the Eastern seaboard.  ##  My challenge to Rob to put his words somewhere for EVERYONE to see (now available at www.robscnote.com). ## How opening up about your vulnerable situation can change others lives and yours. ##  Why cancer patients and their loved ones need a guide like Rob.  ## What to expect when you're diagnosed with cancer and how to handle the road ahead.## Why I believe that some day what started as emails will become a book to inspire and encourage future cancer patients, their loved ones, and anyone looking to overcome any insurmountable obstacle.

I got to sit down with Kimi, who cut her teeth in journalism working in high level positions for such media giants as Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and Oprah Winfrey.  She walks me through the ups and downs that eventually led her to the point where she left journalism to produce one of my favorite films of 2016, the critically acclaimed documentary, "Gleason" as a passion project to tell the story of her best friend.  Our conversation includes...

Getting the bug to be a journalist from a HS project.  ## Being called to report on Columbine just before graduating college.  ##  Working for Tim Russert in DC on 9/11. ## The emotional trauma of sifting through graphic news footage for weeks on end. ##  The competition to "get an exclusive interview".  ##  Working a job that has you on the road constantly.  ##  Making the transition from a high-powered job to a passion project.  ##  Vision Boards.  ## Being involved in a competitive bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival.  ##  Getting shortlisted for the Oscars only to come up without a nomination. ##  How Kimi finds the time to raise kids, do everything she does, and co-author the best-selling book, "A Letter to My Dog", which was sold eighty thousand copies around the world and has been translated into three languages.## Why even those that seem to "have it all" can suffer, sometimes in silence.
